Iraqi opposition to convene meeting in the Iraqi territories

The Iraqi National Conference on Tuesday announced that the Iraqi opposition is seeking to convene its conference next September in the Iraqi territories.

AFP quoted Salah al-Sheikhali, the spokesman for the opposition, as saying in a telephone call from London that the conference might be held in the second half of September in order to elect a new leadership commission and to start the final stages of the change operation inside Iraq.

Al-Sheikhali indicated that the Iraqi opposition prefers to convene the conference in the Iraqi territories in the northern area which is out of the control of the Iraqi government, despite the fact that the area has been always threatened by the Iraqi president.

The spokesman added that the chairman of the Iraqi National Conference, Ahmad al-Shalabi, recently visited Tehran and met with the main opposition figures of the Iraqi Shiite forces, especially the chairman of the Iraqi Higher Council of the Islamic Revolution, Muhammad Baqer Hakim, the officials of the Islamic Labor Organization and the leadership of the al-Dawa party.

Al-Shalabi also visited northern Iraq and met with the officials in the Iraqi Communist Party.

The Iraqi National Conference always introduces itself as the major coalition for the Iraqi opposition, including all political trends, but the said conference has been weakened greatly since 1996, following the split of the opposition groups from it after it was founded in 1992.
