Islamic Salvation Front cautiously replies to Bouteflika's proposals regarding reorganization
Algeria, Politics, 7/20/1999

The prohibited Algerian Islamic Salvation Front (FIS) cautiously replied to the proposals made by Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika that would allow it to reorganize its factions as a political party on the condition that it choose a new leadership.

A prominent member in the movement, Sheikh Abdullah Anas, said in an interview with London Radio that any changes in the organization's leadership will not take place under pressure from the authorities, clarifying that it will be normal if the historical leadership willingly decides to give a chance to new leadership.

The Algerian president's statements came in a discussion with the U.K newspaper Financial Times, in which he expressed his readiness to release the leader of the front, Sheikh Abbas Madani, if he abandoned political work.
