Diplomatic movement by Sudanese opposition in Europe during August
Sudan-France, Politics, 7/20/1999

Mohammed El-Moetasem Hakem, chairman of the foreign relations committee in the Sudanese opposition Democratic Unionist Party said the leaders of the Democratic National Alliance, which represents several Sudanese opposition parties, will carry out an intensive diplomatic movement in Europe during August to face the initiative made by the Sudanese government in some European countries.

Hakem said in press statements that Sudanese opposition leaders will explain the position of the Sudanese opposition toward the current constitution in Sudan and present data about what is going on in the areas of armed confrontations between the government's forces and the opposition. They will also review the situation in general regarding what he called violations of human rights.

Former Sudanese Prime Minister El-Sadek El-Mahdi, leader of the opposition Ummah Party, is visiting France today at the invitation of French Foreign Minister Hubert Vedrine to discuss the current situation in Sudan and to inform the French of the point of view of the Sudanese opposition regarding finding a political settlement for the Sudanese problem.

Meanwhile, French Minister of Cooperation Charles Josselin is receiving today at his office El-Sadek El-Mahdi to discuss developments in the internal situation in Sudan. French diplomatic sources in Cairo said these discussions will also be a chance to get acquainted with horizons of the latest political developments in Sudan and the government in the national reconciliation process and its relations with the armed opposition in light of the negotiations that are currently taking place in Nairobi between Khartoum and the Sudanese opposition.
