On the issue of Syrian - Jordanian relations
Jordan-Syria, Politics, 7/20/1999
The Jordanian weekly al-Majd said that the issue of Jordanian- Syrian relations has been assumed by the chairman of the Jordanian royal court Abdul Karim al-Kabareiti due to his closeness from King Abdullah II and his enthusiasm to build firm relations.
The Jordanian weekly added that political observers in Amman highlighted the two visits held by al-Kabareiti to Damascus during one month during which he conveyed two important messages to President Hafez al-Assad from King Abdullah.
The observers expressed their conviction that King Abdullah is really careful to strengthen the Arab depth of Jordan, especially with Syria, a matter which is being met with great welcome and encouragement from al-Kabareiti, who is known for his closeness to Damascus and Riyadh and other Arab capitals.
The paper also quoted the political observers in Amman as saying that the lines of contacts and political coordination have become widely open between Amman and Damascus and that the Jordanian officials briefed their Syrian counterparts with most precise details of the meeting recently held in Aqaba between King Abdullah and each of Turkish President Suleiman Demirel and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak.
The paper continued that observers indicate that Jordan exerted remarkable efforts to accelerate purifying the atmospheres between Syria and Turkey, and opening the water issue and other issues suspended between the two sides.
The observers indicated that al-Kabareiti, who used in the past to specialize in Jordanian-Palestinian relations due to his firm friendship with leaders of the Palestinian Authority, is at the meantime devoting all his time to following up on Jordanian - Syrian relations and deepening ties between Damascus and Amman in all areas.
