Aznar conveys an invitation to al-Assad from King Juan Carlos to visit Spain

Syrian President Hafez al-Assad on Monday at the Damascus al-Shaab palace received Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar and members of his accompanying delegation.
The meeting was attended by high-ranking Syrian officials.
The Spanish prime minister conveyed to President al-Assad a message from King Juan Carlos of Spain. Premier Aznar also conveyed to al-Assad an invitation to visit Spain, and al-Assad accepted the invitation, promising to pay his visit at a time that is proper for the two sides.
Al-Assad was briefed on the talks concluded between the Syrian and Spanish sides as well as the outcomes of these talks. Discussions dealt with the situations and developments in the region as well as recent atmospheres which allow for the resumption of peace negotiations.
The Spanish prime minister highlighted Spain's position toward the Middle East peace process in the region on the basis of the land-for-peace formula. He expressed his country's readiness to provide any necessary and possible contribution in order to give the Middle East peace process a push forward towards its set objectives.
Later in the day, the Syrian president gave a luncheon banquet in honor of Aznar and his companions.
