Lebanese president for unity of track with Syria, right of resistance
Lebanon-Regional, Politics, 7/20/1999

Lebanese President Emile Lahoud has asserted that Lebanon is seeking to establish a just and comprehensive peace in line with the unity of track and destiny with Syria.

In statements before his visitors on Monday the Lebanese president added that Lebanon's position insists on the need for Israel's withdrawal from the occupied Arab lands in south Lebanon, the western Bekaa and the Golan and guaranteeing the rights of the Palestinians to return to their homes.

He indicated the right of Lebanon to resist the Israeli occupation, which he said is the reason behind the crises and problems in the region.

Meanwhile, replying to a question asked by the Lebanese daily al-Nahar on the deployment of the Lebanese army and UN troops in southern Lebanon after Israeli withdrawal, Lebanese Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Salim al-Hoss said this question is premature.

Giving more details in his reply, the Lebanese premier said, "We are not ready to trade withdrawal for security arrangements in line with UN resolutions 425," adding, "We do abide by the unity of the Lebanese and Syrian tracks and join the peace process on the conditions that it is just and comprehensive and within the framework of the unity of the Syrian and Lebanese tracks.

The Lebanese premier reiterated his country's commitment to UN resolution 425, which provides for Israel's unconditional withdrawal from all Lebanese territories to the internationally-recognized borders.
