Syrian newspapers criticize US for providing Israel with F-16 jets
Syria, Politics, 7/19/1999

Syrian newspapers criticized the United States yesterday for providing Israel with 50 F-16 fighter jets at a cost of $2.5 billion.

It added that this encourages Israel to be intransigent and refuse to implement international resolutions.

The Syrian newspaper Tishreen said yesterday that, "Getting into the peace process does not need offensive weapons but to a real will to make peace and a readiness to translate intentions into a tangible reality."

The newspaper added, "Arming Israel will stir the anxiety of the neighboring Arab states, as Washington seeks to close the doors before any Arab state that looks to purchase weapons, as it is also practicing pressure to prevent another country from selling defensive weapons to the Arabs," adding that Washington pressured Russia to prevent it from selling weapons to Damascus recently.
