Moroccan warning of racism in Spain

A young Moroccan, living in the suburbs of the Spanish norther city of Barcelona, suffered serious injuries Wednesday by a group of racist demonstrators who were protesting the presence of north Africans in the region.

According to the Spanish media, some 1,200 spaniards demonstrated on Wednesday in this Catalan region, inhabited mostly by non-Catalonians and foreigners. The protesters, including youngsters aged below 16, were chanting defamatory slogans.

The Moroccan man who was attacked in front of his house was taken to hospital and the police had to interfere to protect another Moroccan who was about to be lynched by angry skin-heads.The protestors also attacked shops held by north Africans in the city.

Over 50 local non-governmental associations have decided to hold this Friday a rally to protest the racist violence.

Head of the Moroccan Cultural Renaissance Association Nour El-Din Sawah warned that there will be endless strife if the Spanish officials did not find a solution to this problem. He referred that what is currently taking place as unacceptable.

He called on the Spanish police force to intervene to put an end to racial actions practiced against Moroccan immigrants, in a press statement issued today by the association, a copy of which was obtained by ArabicNews.com.
