Ruler of Bahrain, Chirac discusses defence cooperation relations

In his first visit outside the Arab world since he assumed power in March in succession of his father, Bahraini Emir Sheikh Hamad Bin Issa al-Khaleifa arrived in Paris and met with French President Jacques Chirac.
Talks dealt with a cooperation agreement in the area of defense, which is still the pillar of discussions between the two countries. The two sides expressed their desire that the said agreement be signed very soon.
President Chirac and Sheikh Hamad reviewed several topics, especially the situation in Iran, the French president explained that his country's policy "aims at backing makers of openness and modernization," while the emir of Bahrain stressed the need to restore order and security in the Gulf region.
Concerning the question of Iraq, the two sides expressed their concern over having no controls on Iraqi armament.
They also expressed hope of reviving the Arab-Israeli peace process.
Concerning bilateral relations, Sheikh Hamad hoped for a greater French presence in Bahrain, especially in the economic field
Following the signing of a contract to build a seawater desalination factory in April, 1999, the two sides have discussed projects in the areas of oil, electricity, civil aviation and small and intermediate high-tech companies.
