Turkey provides Israel with waters
Israel-Turkey, Economics, 7/16/1999

A joint Turkish-Israeli committee will start within weeks work in order to install an undersea fresh water pipeline to Israel, which will be operated between the two sides.

Israel Radio said that Israeli Foreign Minister David Levy asked his Turkish counterpart, Ismail Cem, who is accompanying Turkish President Suleiman Demirel on his current visit to Israel, during their meeting on Wednesday in Tel Aviv to study the possibility of contracting on a deal according to which Turkey is to provide Israel with water and that Cem responded to the Israeli request.

Levy announced that the naval line, which will be erected at the bottom of the Mediterranean, will transport millions of cubic meters of water annually from Turkey to Israel.

Meanwhile, both Israel and Turkey agreed to operate a new naval line through two Turkish and Israeli companies.

The Turkish president who inaugurated the line during his current visit to Israel said that commercial exchange between Turkey and Israel will witness tangible progress during the coming years in the service of bilateral relations.

In a speech he delivered on Thursday upon taking part in an Israeli economic conference on the sidelines of his current visit to Israel, the Turkish president called for raising the volume of trade between Turkey and Israel during the next five years to US $3 billion.

Demirel indicated that Turkey and Israel are seeking to develop their relations in the area of tourism.
