Iraq hails Egypt's stance opposing British draft resolution in Security Council
Iraq-Egypt, Politics, 7/15/1999
Iraq hailed Egypt's stance which opposes the British draft presented at the UN Security Council regarding Iraq and described Egypt as forming a responsible Arab stance toward this draft, which Iraq refused.
The Iraqi official newspaper, El-Thawra, urged the Arab states in an article published yesterday to do like Egypt in opposing the British draft and to support Iraq with a comprehensive Arab opposition to this draft.
The newspaper said the Egyptian stance contains a correct political stance that goes with the supreme national interest.
Egyptian Assistant Foreign Minister Kassem El-Hasri stated during his meeting last week with Russia's ambassador in Cairo Egypt's objection to the Dutch - British draft that calls for suspending the sanctions until Iraq implements all the international demands, because this condralicts Security Council resolution N 687, which calls for lifting the sanctions when Iraq complies to the decision's requirements.
