Beirut shows solidarity of follow citizens imprisoned in Israel
Lebanon, Politics, 7/15/1999
The follow-up committee in support of the Lebanese detainees in Israeli jails has extended an appeal to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, Arab League Secretary General Esmat Abdul Meguid and international humanitarian organizations, in which it called for releasing all those Lebanese detainees.
The committee, which on Wednesday celebrated the Lebanese Prisoner Day through observing sit-ins and holding seminars, said that Israel holds some 170 Lebanese detainees in its prisons, of which 128 are in Asqalan, Nafha and Eiloun prisons, as well as ten Palestinians.
In Beirut, the Lebanese citizens carried out a sit-in before the Lebanese Parliament while it was discussing the state's budget for 1999. They circulated documents demanding the release of the Lebanese detainees in Israeli jails, especially those aged between 12 and 18.
Meanwhile a dialogue meeting was held at the Ministry of Information. It was attended by former Lebanese Foreign Minister Fares Boueiz and several people who were liberated from the Israeli jails.
