On President al-Assad's pardon
Syria, Politics, 7/15/1999

Well-informed sources told the London-based al- Hayat daily that the pardon released by Syrian President Hafez al-Assad will include several Jordanians and Palestinians as well as Lebanese who were tried in Syria for committing non-political crimes.

Earlier, the daily quoted a Syrian official as saying that the number of Jordanian non-political prisoners is 57, in addition to another 12 political prisoners, who are accused of spying for Israel.

The paper added that observers expect the release of a special pardon to release a group of Muslim Brothers who are not directly involved in the explosives and several communists and supporters of the Communist Labor League.

The paper added that the experts noted that the pardon did not exclude crimes pertaining to state security, as usually happened in the previous general pardons.
