Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak said that new Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak has an opportunity to get the Middle East peace process moving. In a pre-departure press statement in Algeria, where he attended the 35th summit of the Organization of African Unity, the Egyptian president indicated that the summit is being held in Algeria in order to prove to world public opinion the stability this Arab state is enjoying. The second batch of Syrian aid for Lebanon arrived on Tuesday in Beirut to help rebuild the power stations of al-Jamhour and Bsalim. Eight Syrian trucks carried electrical equipment. The trucks, sent under the name "Solidarity with Lebanon," were accompanied by an engineering delegation from the Syrian Ministry of Electricity. Since the recent Israeli aggression against Lebanon, and the destruction of the two Lebanese power stations, Syrian electricity Minister Munib Saem al-Daher has visited Lebanon twice to get acquainted with Lebanon's needs. The mayor of occupied Jerusalem, Ehud Olmert, and high-ranking officials in the municipality of Jerusalem announced that they will boycott the reception due to be held by the French general consul in Israel on the occasion of the French national day which falls today in protest against holding separate parties for the Jews and the Arabs. The municipality of Jerusalem said in a statement released on Tuesday that the French consulate follows up a policy which does not comply with its obligation to establish relations with all citizens, regardless of their national and religious affiliation, Israel Radio reported. Israel Radio said on Tuesday that Jordan's King Abdullah bin Hussein and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak during their meeting due on Tuesday in Aqaba discussed the results of talks the Jordanian chief of the royal court, Abdul Kareem al-Kabareiti, held in Damascus with high-ranking Syrian officials. The radio noted rapprochement that took place recently between Amman and Damascus, adding that Barak is concerned that such rapprochement will not be at the expense of Jordanian - Israeli relations. Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak said "We are working now to hold an expanded pan-Arab Summit, and although there are still reservations and opposition from some Arab leaders, we are determined to resume the efforts to hold the Summit by autumn." Bashar al-Assad, son of Syrian President Hafez al-Assad, on Tuesday visited the industrial Yanbaa city and the Saudi Aramco petroleum company where a documentary was presented on the city and the main equipment of the industrial city, also presentation were made on the history of discovering oil in Saudi Arabia and stages of its development. US planes patrolling the no-fly zone over northern Iraq today were fired on by Iraqi anti-aircraft artillery, responding by bombing "command and control sites west of Mosul," a statement from the US European Command said. The statement added that the planes departed the area safely. Go

A Palestinian official has confirmed that the Israeli authorities confiscated 130,000 square meters of Islamic Endowment lands in the West Bank. The official in charge of the endowments, Yousef Salama, said in a statement to the Jordanian Al-Dustour newspaper published on Tuesday, that the Israeli measure is part of a scheme to confiscate 150,000 square meters of endowment lands in the West Bank. It was officially announced in Amman on Tuesday that Turkish President Suleiman Demirel will arrive in Amman on Friday for an official visit to Jordan. During his visit, Demirel will meet with Jordanian King Abdullah II, and the two leaders will hold talks on the Middle East peace process as well as bilateral relations between the two countries.
