Senegalese minister of fisheries and maritime transport in Morocco
Morocco-Senegal, Economics, 7/14/1999
Senegalese Minister of Fisheries and Maritime Transport Alassane Dialy Ndiaye started this Wednesday a visit to Morocco meant to enhance cooperation in maritime fisheries.
The Senegalese official told reporters upon arrival that Senegal wishes to benefit from the Moroccan experience in the field of maritime fisheries to promote its own fisheries sector.
The Senegalese official will attend in the Moroccan northern city of Larache the dedication of a maritime fisheries training institute.
Morocco and Senegal concluded last May cooperation accords in the fields of sea fisheries and merchant navy.
The accords were concluded during the visit Moroccan Prime Minister Abderrahmane Youssoufi paid to Senegal part of a tour to Guinea, Cote D'Ivoire, Gabon and Burkina Faso.
The sea fisheries accord provides for the holding of training courses to the benefit of the two countries professionals and the exchange of trainers and experts. Under the accord, the two countries will carry out joint scientific research programs to ensure a better knowledge and use of sea resources.
Morocco and Senegal also pledged to exchange expertise in aquaculture, sea resources monitoring and fisheries techniques and equipment.
Cooperation in matters of sea products processing and marketing is also provided for by the accord.
The merchant navy agreement deals with sea transport between Moroccan and Senegalese ports and calls for lifting all obstacles impeding the development of bilateral navigation and trade.
Under the accord, Moroccan and Senegalese ship-owners will set up joint ventures and create sea transport services.
Moroccan fisheries professionals have repeatedly pleaded for promoting Morocco's cooperation in the sector of fisheries with African countries.
The call was renewed at a study day held recently in Rabat by the chairman of the Moroccan Federation of Maritime Fisheries, Abderrahim Laabidi, who urged for exploring new prospects to Morocco's cooperation in the sector of fisheries, mainly in the African continent and in the countries of the Arab Maghreb.
Morocco's exports to Senegal, made up mainly of garments, phosphoric acid, fresh and canned vegetables and fertilizers, are worth $15 million, while imports are valued at nearly $1 million.
