Syrian PNF meets on latest developments
Syria, Politics, 7/14/1999
The central leadership of the Syrian Progressive National Front (under which all parties in Syria are rallied) held a meeting on Tuesday chaired by Syrian Vice President Muhammad Zuheir Masharqa.
The participants in the meeting listened to a comprehensive political report read by Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa, highlighting a number of issues in the Arab, regional and international arenas.
The PNF reviewed the latest political developments, especially the visit paid by President Hafez al-Assad to Russia.
The leadership noted that this visit by al-Assad to Moscow is a "distinguished effort to deepen historical and strong standing relations between Syria and Russia."
The PNF studied the results of the recent Israeli elections and found that the peace process was stalled during the past three years as a result of the intransigent policy pursued by the former Israeli government. It stressed that Syria possesses the desire to revive the peace process and to resume the peace talks from the point at which they broke off.
The PNF also said the new Israeli government must translate its positive intentions into tangible steps.
