US congress opposes Geneva conference

The US congress on Monday opposed the convocation of the UN-sponsored conference due to be held in Geneva tomorrow in order to discuss conditions of the Palestinian people in the occupied Arab territories.
The AFP said the UN General Assembly called for convening the conference to discuss Israel's continuous violation of the 1949 Geneva Convention and its increasing settlement activities, which run counter to all international agreements.
Earlier, the US House of Representatives objected to the Geneva conference and called on UN Secretary General Kofi Annan as well as on Switzerland (the host country) to refuse to give any assistance to the conference.
The US along with Israel were the only two countries in the world that opposed the decision of the UN General Assembly to hold this conference.
