On Syrian -Jordanian relations
Syria-Jordan, Politics, 7/14/1999

The charge d'affairs in the Syrian embassy in Amman, Wahib Jaber, has asserted that Syrian - Jordanian relations are deeply rooted, firm and solid. In a statement to the Jordanian weekly al-Sabeel issued on Tuesday, Jaber added, "These relations are not promoted nor violated by the presence of a Syrian Ambassador to Jordan, or a charge d'affairs."

Jaber continued that there is to be a meeting of the Syrian - Jordanian higher committee shortly and, "I think the issue of appointing a Syrian ambassador to Jordan will be debated."

For his part, the assistant secretary general of the progressive Baath Party in Jordan has considered the presence of a Syrian ambassador in Amman as an administrative matter rather than a political one.

In a statement to the same paper, Dabbour indicated that there are more than 35 Syrian embassies that do not have ambassadors in various parts of the world. He added that such a decision is in the area of the speciality of the Syrian Foreign Ministry and the government there, but it has no connection to Syrian - Jordanian relations.

He stressed that relations between the two states are witnessing positive developments in the service of the people of Jordan and Syria.

Dabbour added that the Syrian embassy is present on Jordanian soil and is carrying out its duties in the best way. He explained that trade, political, economic and water relations between the two states have improved recently, adding that there is a political coordination on a high level between the two countries.

He described Syrian-Jordanian relations as promising and proceeding on the right track in a way serving the national interest of the two states. He asserted that appointing a Syrian ambassador in Amman is decided by the Syrian government.
