Parliamentarian: No Jordanian mediation between Syria and Israel
Jordan-Syria, Politics, 7/14/1999
Jordanian Parliament member Hamad al-Fara'enah said on the possibility of Jordan's playing the role of the mediator between Israel and Syria in order to establish peace, that he does not think that such an inclination is true, adding that he also does not think that Jordan will play the mediation role between Israel and Syria.
"The Syrians are qualified to maintain such a direct role with Israel, and if there is such a mediation it will be an American mediation rather than a Jordanian," the Jordanian parliament member said.
In an interview with Israeli radio on Tuesday, al-Fara'enah said the visit of the chief of the Jordanian royal court, Abdul Kareem al-Kabareiti, to Damascus is targeting two issues: The first is direct coordination between Syria and Jordan concerning relations with Israel, and the second is that Jordan wants talks with Israel, the Syrian questions from the Syrian very point of view, "Therefore, the Jordanian side adopts and backs the Syrian demands."
He added, "As a result Jordan will not play the role of broker between the two sides, because Syria and Israel do not need a mediator."
