Mauritania, Senegal cooperate in struggle against granivorous birds
Mauritania-Senegal, Agriculture, 7/13/1999
Mauritania and Senegal are projecting to launch shortly the second phase of their joint cooperation program in struggle against granivorous (grain-eating) birds in the border region of the Senegal river valley.
Granivorous birds are a serious threat to rice culture. Struggle against these transborder seed eaters is legitimate and enables to protect a common heritage, a senior official at the Senegalese ministry of rural development told local daily Le Soleil.
A recent operation, part of the joint program of struggle against granivorous birds that was initiated in 1995, enabled the treatment of some 10,544 trees over 85 hectares where the queleas-queleas birds were proliferating.
