Israeli Education Minister Yossi Sarid on Sunday stressed that the Arabic language will be kept as the second compulsory language in the Israeli schools. Lebanese President Emile Lahoud on Sunday in Beirut received the UN undersecretary general, who is also director general of the UN bureau for controlling drugs and combating crime. Talks dealt with joint cooperation between Lebanon and the UN in the area of combating drugs as well as aid which the international organization may provide to the Lebanese government to develop planting areas. The UN delegate told the Lebanese president that the UN decided to give Lebanon US $4 million to help it in supporting alternative plants to drugs. Go

Lebanese Prime Minister Salim al-Hoss has strongly rejected a statement which was released by the US State Department warning the US citizens from visiting Sidon. In a statement he made in Beirut on Sunday, the Lebanese prime minister asserted that security and stability are completely prevailing over all Lebanese lands, noting that the situation in the Sidon region does not differ from other Lebanese areas. Members of the Israeli Knesset from the United Arab List met on Sunday with the Jordanian ambassador to Israel, Omar al-Refa. In an interview with Israel Radio, United Arab List Knesset member Muhamad Kanan stated that they asked the Jordanian ambassador to convey a message to the Jordanian king on the eve of his meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, stressing the backing of the list's members for the Israeli premier in the new inclinations he had already announced in order to give the Middle East peace process a push forward. Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad Bin Khaleifa al-Thani met on Sunday in Doha with United Arab Emirates Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed al-Khaleifa.
