Lebanese prisoners confront Israeli jailers
Lebanon, Politics, 7/12/1999
Bloody confrontations took place between members of the Israeli forces guarding Khiam Prison and Lebanese detainees when those detainees tried to run away.
A statement released in Beirut on Sunday by the Lebanese detainees' follow-up committee said the clashes happened three days ago. The committee indicated that the confrontations erupted when an Israeli security officer threatened the detainees, especially Suleiman Ramadan, who was threatened with amputation of his second leg and being transported to Nafha prison in the desert.
The Israeli forces used whips, rubber bullets and tear gas grenades. Many Lebanese detainees were admitted to Marjyoun hospital in the occupied border strip of south Lebanon, the statement added.
Moreover, the committee called on all human rights defenders and advocates all over the world to organize a protest campaign against acts of suppression practised by the Israeli forces against the Lebanese detainees.
