AL team to Comoros calls for formulating new African stand toward coup
Comoros-Regional, Politics, 7/12/1999
The fact-finding commission delegated by the Arab League to Comoros called on Arab League Secretary General Esmat Abdul Meguid to hold consultations with the secretary general of the Organisation of African Unity, Salem Ahmad Salem, on the sidelines of the African summit in Algeria in order to formulate a new position in dealing with the ruling regime in Comoros that permits the OAU to supervise the agreement of Tananarego, capital of Madagascar, and the transfer of authority from the coup's military regime to civilians in April, 2000.
The AL team stated in a report circulated by the Arab League among its member states that the mission found that the African mechanism for settling disputes concerning the coup in Comoros is not realistic.
The AL and its member states refused to recognize the new regime in Comoros and decided to send a fact-finding commission in order to submit its report to the AL so as to take a united Arab position toward the new regime in Comoros led by Col. Othman Ghazali. The OAU also refused to recognize the regime.
