US secretary of state stresses achieving peace
Regional-USA, Politics, 7/12/1999

US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright has asserted the importance of the realization of peace in the Middle East within one year from the date following the election of Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak.

In an interview granted to the London-based al-Wasat magazine in its current issue, the US secretary of state said the US believes that the Oslo Accord is not an open or endless process as former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had believed, rather both parties are to reach and agreement on pending issues within one year.

Albright urged the Israelis and Palestinians to avoid taking unilateral and individual measures such as settlements. She, furthermore, expressed happiness over the election of Ehud Barak as prime minister of Israel.
