OAU foreign ministers council meets in Algiers
Algeria, Politics, 7/12/1999

The foreign ministers council of the Organization of African Unity has reiterated its total backing for the right of the Palestinian people to establish their own independent state on their own native soil according to the principles of international law.

It denounced Israel's stances towards peace talks in the Middle East. The representatives of the 70th session of the foreign ministers' council of the Organization of African Unity called at the conclusion of their works on Sunday for totally lifting the sanctions imposed on Libya. They stressed that Libya has totally abided by necessary conditions needed for lifting the embargo imposed on it.

The council addressed a call to various Somali factions to establish peace in Somalia and to stop the flow of weapons to it so as to give peace a chance.

The council decided to take tough measures against the UNITA movement in Angola and called for abidance by the Lusaka agreement.

The council expressed concern over the situations of the evacuees and the refugees from the country of Angola, noting that there are seven million refugees and 13 million evacuees in Africa.

The council, moreover, ratified some 50 draft projects and recommendations that will be submitted to the 35th summit of the OAU which will start deliberations in the Algerian capital.

Meanwhile, the works of the 35th summit of the Organization of African Unity are starting today in Algeria with the attendance of 40 heads of African countries.

The summit is expected to discuss the civil wars in Africa, African - Arab solidarity in all fields, and the African agreement for combating terrorism.

The leaders of the organization are seeking through the summit to discuss issues that are still a matter of conflict among the OAU member states, like the Moroccan Sahara, the Eritrean - Ethiopian conflict and another issues concerning people of the continent.
