Strong security measures in Manama
Bahrain, Politics, 7/10/1999
The police in Bahrain today preserved intensive presence around Shiite villages, despite the calm prevailing since the release of Shiite opposition figure Abdul Ameer al-Jamri.
AFP's correspondent in Manama said the police are still erecting barriers at the entrances of villages, inspecting the identities of the passersby and inspecting cars.
Fierce demonstrations erupted at the beginning of this week in several Shiite villages in southern and western Bahrain, on the sidelines of the trial of Sheikh al-Jamri who was sentenced to ten years imprisonment before he was pardoned by the Emir of Bahrain on Thursday.
Al-Jamri appeared yesterday on Bahrain T.V. thanking the Emir of Bahrain for pardoning his previous activities and pledged not to involve himself in activities that threat Bahrain security.
