Tripoli says no conditions set for restoring relations with London
Libya-UK, Politics, 7/9/1999
The Libyan people's general conference announced on Thursday that Tripoli did not commit itself to any conditions in order to restore relations with London.
The secretary general of the foreign affairs at the conference, Abdul Rahman Shalqam, told the Libyan news agency that, "There is no obligation to any conditions or other matters in this regard, except the agreement to restore relations between the two countries."
On Wednesday, British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook said Tripoli had agreed to pay the compensations for the killing of British policewoman Yvonne Fletcher in 1984 in front of the Libyan embassy in London, a matter "which paves the way before restoring back diplomatic relations between the two countries", and that Libya would cooperate with the investigation where policewoman Fletcher was killed by bullet in 1984 when Libyan opposition members were demonstrating in front of their embassy.
The department which serves British interests in Tripoli is to be upgraded immediately into an embassy.
