Algeria hosts 35th African summit
Regional-Algeria-Africa, Politics, 7/9/1999
On July 12 - 14, the 35th session summit of the Organization of African Unity will be held in Algiers at a time when the African continent is witnessing unprecedented acts of violence since the establishment of the organization in 1963, as a result of a series of bloody confrontations.
Yet, the African continent has recently witnessed atmospheres of optimism following the signature of a peace agreement last Wednesday between the conflicting sides in Sierra Leone.
In reference to conflicts in Africa, the International Institute for Peace Research in Stockholm said that out of 27 main armed struggles all over the world there are some 11 conflicts in Africa, noting that among the six new armed conflicts recorded this year there are five that erupted in Africa in Angola, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Guinea Bissau and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
