President Saleh a candidate for the coming Yemeni Presidency
Yemen, Politics, 7/9/1999
Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh on Thursday agreed to be the candidate for the Yemeni General People's Conference party in the presidential elections to be held on September 28.
A high-ranking Yemeni official in the party said that Saleh is the "most capable of leading the country and carrying out necessary changes."
Analysts said that the reelection of President Saleh for a new term of office is almost certain because he has been already nominated by the General People's Conference party, which has 226 seats in the Yemeni Parliament, and the al-Islah al-Islami party, which has all but 11 of the remaining seats in the parliament.
Last week Saleh said he will not seek to be reelected as president of the country, but he agreed to join the electoral competition when he was unanimously nominated by his party.
