Gaddafi summons mini summit to settle Eritrea - Ethiopia dispute
Libya-Africa, Politics, 7/9/1999
Libyan leader Col Moammar Gaddafi called for a meeting of members of the African mini-summit in charge of settling the border dispute between Eritrea and Ethiopia to be held in Tripoli today or tomorrow.
The said mini-summit is composed of the presidents of Burkina Faso, Zimbabwe, Djibouti and the secretary general of the Organization of African Unity, Salem Ahmad Salem. The committee formed as a result of the summit had reached a plan that falls in the course of African efforts to settle the conflict between Eritrea and Ethiopia and to end the war between the two sides. Yet, the plan has not yet been implemented.
On Friday, Libya announced that its delegate to the African Horn, Ali Abdul Salam al-Tureiki has reached an agreement with both Asmara and Addis Ababa to end the fighting that has erupted between their two forces since May 1998. But Eritrea and Ethiopia downplayed the importance of the Libyan declarations and stressed that al-Tureiki's talks did not reach the level of maintaining an agreement.
