AL, UN sign two cooperation agreements
Regional-UN, Politics, 7/9/1999
The permanent legal committee of the Arab League council has approved at the conclusion of its works on Wednesday held at the headquarters of the AL two draft cooperation agreements between the AL and each of the UNHCR (UN Higher Commission for Refugees) and the UNDP (UN Development Program).
The chairman of the committee, Sheikh Jasem Bin Nasser, who is also the director of the legal department at Qatar's Foreign Ministry, said the two agreements will be put into actual implementation following their signatures by the AL and the UN chiefs.
The draft agreement with the UNHCR calls for periodical consultations to find solutions for protecting refugees, exchanging information, reports and special reports on the work policy and operation of each side in this regard.
The two sides of the agreement stressed adherence to UNRWA in the near east and its continuous efforts to provide its services in its five areas of operation in Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, the West Bank and Gaza Strip until a just solution is found to the question of the refugees.
The second draft project for cooperation with the UNDP covers setting up a general committee by the two sides to meet at least once every year in order to study common projects and follow up their implementation and to eliminate obstacles hindering work progress.
Through consultation with the AL, the project studies specialized capabilities and backs training at the AL general secretariat.
The agreement also calls for exchanging bilateral activities of economic, social, cultural, health, media, human and administrative projects.
