Research institute on medicinal plants to be set up in Morocco
Morocco, Science, 7/8/1999
A research institute on medicinal plants will be set up in the region of Taounate, near Fes.
The center will be set up in cooperation with the European Union, said Moroccan Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Najib Zerouali, who made the announcement earlier this week during a graduation ceremony.
Morocco harbors some 42,000 species of plants, but only 800 are used in the medicine and perfume industries, the official said, noting that the marketing of plants is scoring an increasing progress due to the use of these plants, either traditional or modern, in medicine, cosmetics and others.
He called for the creation of Moroccan enterprises to promote this industry and for upgrading research in the field to glean accurate data on Moroccan plants.
