Preparations underway for Casablanca international athletics meet, Aouita says
Morocco-International, Sports, 7/8/1999

World track and field legend Said Aouita said on Wednesday that preparations are underway for holding on July 13 an international athletics meeting in the Moroccan metropolitan city of Casablanca.

Aouita told MAP news agency the organizing committee is putting the final touches for holding the meeting. He underlined that all logistical arrangements were made including transportation and accommodation with the contribution of the Moroccan carrier Royal Air Maroc.

Aouita -- the sole three-time winner of the IAAF grand Prix in the World (1986, 1988, 1989) and former holder of five world records -- said the Casablanca meeting will meet all organizational and technical conditions required by the World Athletics governing body IAAF.

Omega, a world leader in Athletic meets timings, dispatched to Morocco eight engineers, sophisticated computers and technical equipment to ensure the success of the event, he said.

The meeting, to be aired live by Eurosport, the Moroccan second tv channel 2M and a Japanese channel, includes 10 contests for men and eight for women, the former world and Olympic champ said.

Several international athletics stars will participate in the Moroccan meeting, Aouita said, citing US John Godina, world discus champ, World 400 m hurdles recordwoman Kim Batten of the USA, women's 400 M hurdles olympic champ Deon Hemmings of Jamaica, 400 m champ Samuel Matete of Zambia and several Ethiopian and Kenyan racers.
