King Hassan calls for restoring trust in Mideast
Morocco-Israel, Politics, 7/8/1999

King Hassan II called for restoring, at any cost, a climate of trust in the Middle-East and renewed will to spare no effort to promote peace in the region.

"The climate of trust that Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin managed to build, should be restored," King Hassan II said in an interview with French weekly Le Nouvel Observateur.

Hopes for the revival of the Middle East peace process -- stalled during the tenure of hard-line former Israeli Likud Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu -- were rekindled following the election of Labor leader Ehud Barak.

King Hassan II also underlined that he will spare no effort to contribute to promoting peace in the region.

"I will spare no effort with new Prime Minister (Barak) to promote peace (...) because I think we wasted much time," he said.

Meanwhile, Morocco is "upbeat" over the policy of the new Israeli prime minister and the "positive points" in his program, the spokesman of the Moroccan Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Ministry said after the formation of the Labor Prime Minister Ehud Barak's government.

The spokesman also underlined that Morocco "will stay ready to back the Middle-East peace process whenever it is asked to do so."

Barak on Tuesday called for the conclusion of a "peace of braves" with the Arab countries.

Relatedly, the London-based Asharq Al-Awsat daily reported on Wednesday that Ehud Barak would visit Morocco shortly.

The daily, which revealed that Israeli Foreign Minister David Levy will visit Morocco before Barak, said the new Israeli prime minister will come to Morocco before flying to the USA for talks with President Bill Clinton.

Asharq Al-Awsat said that Barak mentioned in his inaugural speech the role played by King Hassan II in the Middle East peace process.
