Morocco, China sign accord on maritime transport
Morocco-China, Economics, 7/6/1999

Morocco and China concluded in Rabat on Monday an accord consolidating the juridical framework of bilateral cooperation in matters of maritime transport.

The accord, signed by Moroccan Minister of Transport Mustapha Mansouri, and Chinese Minister of Communication Huang Zhendong, who is currently visiting Morocco at the head of a delegation, is meant to give a new momentum to trade, cultural and tourism exchanges between the two countries.

Mansouri underlined during the signing ceremony the need to encourage the two countries' shipowners to explore the possibilities to exploit regular maritime lines and to coordinate actions for a maximum use of the potentials offered by both sides.

Almost the totality of Morocco's external exchanges are made through the maritime channel, he said, adding that Moroccan ports record annually nearly 14,000 stopovers of boats which load or unload cargoes coming from or destined to 120 countries.

The Chinese official on his part said the accord is the result of the official visit that Moroccan Premier Abderrahmane Youssoufi paid to China last December. He recalled that during this visit, the two countries signed a package of agreements and initialed an accord on cooperation in merchant navy and another on air transport.

The Chinese official conferred in the afternoon with advisor to King Hassan II for economic and financial affairs, Andre Azoulay, on bilateral cooperation and on the advantages offered by Morocco to foreign investors.
