Islamic organization calls international libraries association to abstain from holding conference in Jerusalem
Regional, Politics, 7/6/1999
The Rabat-based Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) asked the International Federation of Library Associations to cancel a project to hold its general conference in Jerusalem (Al-Quds).
A statement of ISESCO, a branch of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC/based in Jeddah), argues that the choice of the occupied city of al-Quds as a venue for the conference, slated in 2000, runs counter to international legality and decisions of the UN General Assembly and Security Council which consider al-Quds as an occupied territory.
ISESCO's general director, Abdulaziz Othmane Al-Twaijri, asked the federation's secretary general to conform to international decisions and abide by the rules of international law and legality by renouncing to hold its conference in the city.
