Algerian prime minister presents civil reconciliation draft to parliament
Algeria, Politics, 7/6/1999
Algerian Prime Minister Ismail Hamdani presented to the national public council the draft law for civil reconciliation, which will determine the destiny of the Islamists who threw down their weapons.
This draft will be raised in the government's council and Cabinet for a referendum after being ratified by the parliament.
The presentation of the project to the parliament comes hours after a presidential pardon was declared that includes thousands of Islamist prisoners who were not involved in rape or bloody crimes.
Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika said that whatever the results of the vote by the national public council regarding the reconciliation law, he will go to a public referendum to give people the right to choose, out of his strong belief that Algeria has moved from a revolutionary phase to a phase of public discussion.
