Turabi sends envoy to meet with Sudanese opposition in Cairo

Kamal Tayeb Idris, the envoy of the chairman of the Sudanese National Council, Hassan Turbai, has been holding talks since Saturday in Cairo with leaders of Sudanese opposition groups to settle the conflicts which have led to divisions in the country.

The spokesman for the opposition Democratic National Alliance, Farouk Abu Issa, said it is Idris's mission to convince the opposition to open a dialogue with Turabi. He added that realizing this matter necessitates returning "to democracy and consolidation of the freedom of opinion, halting acts of arrest, lifting emergency and carrying out fair elections."

The Sudanese opposition announced these demands for the first time in June in Asmara during the meeting of the Democratic National Alliance.

Abu Issa added that it seems that Turabi will eventually approve these principles, yet it is necessary that the government release a statement in this regard in order to be able to open a dialogue with it.
