Syria-Russia, Politics, 7/6/1999
Russian diplomatic sources in Damascus said that the Middle East peace process and the military cooperation will be among the most important issues President al-Assad is carrying to Moscow to discuss with his Russian counterpart, Boris Yeltsin.
In statements to the Kuwaiti daily al-Rai al-Am published in Kuwait on Monday, the Russian sources said that the Syrian-Russian talks will deal with means of benefiting from the Russian role in the Middle East peace process, which are expected to be revived
The Russian sources expected Moscow to play a role in the Middle East peace process despite the declaration made by Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak that he will restore relations between Tel Aviv and Washington to what had been before they were disturbed by Netanyahu.
The Russian sources also expected that the Syrian -Russian talks will deal with means of restoring military cooperation to what it had been before and to focus on economic cooperation. The sources said the question of the Syrian debts to Russia will not be highlighted.
