Iraqi paper criticizes the Gulf states
Iraq, Politics, 7/6/1999
The Iraqi daily al-Thawra has criticized the Gulf states for calling on Baghdad to cooperate with the UN in the statement which was released by the foreign ministers of the Gulf Cooperation Council.
The Iraqi paper said that it would sound better for these countries (the GCC states) to call on Washington and London to halt their attacks against Iraq.
In its Monday editorial the Iraqi paper said, "The brotherly ministers issued their statement in Jeddah," and therefore Iraq will not be surprised that their final statement has what it contained concerning Iraq, which the paper characterized as "excerpts" which "regrettably" raise "wonders on the international legitimacy resolutions that Iraq has defied."
The foreign ministers of the Gulf Cooperation Council states called on Saturday in their final statement on Iraq to completely cooperate with the UN in order to implement all UN Security Council resolutions concerned, to take the necessary steps to prove its peaceful intention towards the state of Kuwait and the neighboring states, and to ensure by Iraq's confession that its invasion of the state of Kuwait was a violation of Arab and international norms.
