Al-Assad to hold official talks with Yeltsin today

Syrian President Hafez al-Assad arrived in Moscow on Monday for a two-day official visit to Russia at the invitation of Russian President Boris Yeltsin. In his visit, President al-Assad was welcomed at the airport by Russian Prime Minister Sergei Stepashin, Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov, high-ranking Russian Foreign Ministry officials and the Russian ambassador in Damascus.
Official talks are due to start today at the Kremlin in a closed-door meeting between President al-Assad and Russian President Boris Yeltsin. This closed-door meeting will be followed by a plenary meeting to be attended by members of the Syrian delegation and senior Russian officials.
The spokesman for the Syrian delegation told reporters that talks will deal with bilateral relations of cooperation in various domains, international conditions and their ramifications, regional situations and recent developments in the region, foremost being the Middle East peace process and attempts made to revive it.
The Syrian delegation accompanying President al-Assad includes Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa, Minister of the Economy and Foreign Trade Muhammad al-Imadi, Finance Minister Khaled al-Maheyni, Agriculture Minister Asaad Mustafa, Industry Minister Ahmad Nizameddine and officials from Syrian ministries.
