Salah not to run for reelection
Yemen, Politics, 7/5/1999
Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh told members of Yemen's ruling People's General Congress yesterday that he did not plan to run for reelection.
"The door of candidacy is open not for Ali Abdullah Saleh but for everyone who likes to run for President's position," an electronic bulletin from the Yemeni news agency , Saba, quoted him as saying. He added, "I'm going to hand over the power to the homeland and to whosoever wishes to lead the march and shoulder the responsibility. I'm not a candidate, and I don't accept candidacy because I know what the power is," speaking about the efforts needed and tireless work days
The Conference is held under the slogan ³together in the road of development. "The thing we are proud of the most is that this conference is bringing together people from all over the Republic with their different trends" President was reported saying.
"It is a pity that all parties speak about the deteriorating economy, we wish that these parties could solve the problem, we are ready to support them, we donıt say that what is said by opposition is wrong but they should speak about facts in figures, they should present alternatives, especially now as we are at the threshold of the presidential elections, then local elections, and two years later the parliamentary elections" the president said. Adding ³We call upon all sons of the homeland represented by partism, social and scientific personalities to present their candidates for presidential elections. And they should have their own programs, because he who is going to be elected will be a President for all sons of the homeland and not only for a party or group. Candidates should not be something for merely decoration.
President said ³ the door of candidacy is open not for Ali Abdullah Saleh but for everyone who likes to run for Presidentıs position.
Iım going to hand over the power to the homeland and to who so ever wishes to lead the march and shoulder the responsibility. Iım not a candidate and I donıt accept candidacy because I know what power is.
It is tiredness and staying awake at night. And it is something else for he who wants to have power by violence and terrorism. And we never did. Something like this.
