On the results of the Kuwaiti elections
Kuwait, Politics, 7/5/1999
Election results published on Sunday in Kuwait by Kuwaiti dailies indicated that the Kuwaiti opposition scored a strong success against pro-government candidates in the parliamentary elections carried out on Saturday.
The liberal opposition won 14 seats at the nation's council (Parliament), the Islamists won 20 seats and the other 16 seats were shared by others, especially those who support the government.
The Kuwaiti daily Kuwait Times described the results of the elections as a big victory for the liberals, whose seats never exceeded 4 in the former nation's council.
For its part the Kuwaiti daily al-Rai al-Am said that the return of the al-Soukour (Hawks) to the nation's council will increase disputes with the government, which wanted to have a more cooperative council succeed the one that the emir of Kuwait, Prince Jaber al-Ahmad al-Sabah, dissolved.
The paper added these elections are the last to be carried out without the participation of women after the decision taken by the emir of Kuwait to give the woman the right to vote.
