Report: Washington to propose to Barak details on Golan security arrangements
Regional-USA, Politics, 7/2/1999
The British daily the Guardian issued on Thursday published a report from its correspondent in Israel saying that officials in Washington have prepared a detailed plan for security arrangements between Israel and Syria.
These security arrangements cover the deployment of US soldiers in the Golan Heights. The paper added that the plan will be proposed to the Israeli Prime Minister-elect Ehud Barak during his visit to Washington.
The paper said that the US administration is pleased in the meantime as Barak has announced that he will form his government within a few days, after which the US administration will be able to invite Barak for consultations with US President Bill Clinton very soon.
The paper reported that it is expected that Barak will visit the US capital either on July 12 or 19.
The paper added that the Americans intend to propose to Barak a tripartite summit which will also include the US President Bill Clinton and Palestinian President Yasser Arafat in the autumn of this year in an attempt to make a rapid progress in the final negotiations.
