Early vegetable exports up, citrus fruit exports down

Morocco's exports of early vegetables during the current agricultural campaign have recorded up to May 31, 1999 a 33% increase, with exports totalling 387,000 tons, compared to 292,000 tons the previous campaign.

The newsletter of the Ministry of Agriculture, "Flash Agri," which reported the figures said that the southern region of Souss and the central region have supplied respectively 66% and 34% of these exports and that exports of tomatos totalled an unprecedented volume of 232,000 tons.

The European Union received 86% of these exports while only 9% went to Eastern European countries.

The exports of citrus fruits have recorded a slight drop of 3% with 573,000 tons.

The European Union received 57% of these exports, 28% went to the countries of the East, and 10% to North America. The Canadian market took in 11,000 tons of Moroccan oranges, compared to only a thousand tons the previous campaign.

"Flash Agri" noted that Moroccan citrus fruits have started to penetrate the Hong Kong market which soaked 3,000 tons of the Morocco-late orange variety.
