Prominent opposition figure tried in Bahrain
Bahrain, Politics, 7/1/1999
The Bahraini opposition said on Wednesday that the trial of Sheikh Abdul Ameer al-Jamri, the main opposition figure in Bahrain, who is also accused of playing a key role in anti-government riots, will resume next Sunday.
AFP quoted a statement released by Ahrar al-Bahrain, which takes London as a headquarters, as saying that the lawyers who defend al-Jamri said the second session of his trail which started on February 21 will be held in July 4.
Al-Jamri, who denied the accusations addressed to him, is one of the eight opposition figures who were arrested on January 21 and 22, 1996.
Several calls were made to release al-Jamri, especially from the Amnesty International and the Lawyers International Association as well as the Independent Lawyers and Judges Centers, with London as its headquarters, as well as from the Arab Organization for Human Rights.
The Bahraini opposition calls for the reestablishment of the Bahraini Parliarment which was dissolved in 1975 and for the release of political prisoners.
