Egyptian plan to cope with Y2K problem
Egypt, Economics, 6/30/1999

General Ihab Mostafa Olwi, head of the Egyptian central body for mobilization and statistics, said the Egyptian government made a plan to cope with the computer problem in the year 2000, known as the Y2K problem.

The plan includes stages, among which are determining the quantity and quality of the machines which suffer this problem and making priorities for the machines that affect the daily life of Egyptian citizens like electric, bills, water, phones, banks, health and social insurance, harbors and airports. It also calls for making an alternative plan in case of the failure of these machines due to the problem.

The conforming machines reached 166 large computers, 2,327 mid-size, 108,000 personal computers with 7,386 as not Y2K compliant.

Olwi added, "97% of the plan was successfully implemented by the end of current June and the remaining percentage will be implemented by the end of September."
