PKK warns against Ocalan's hanging
Turkey, Politics, 6/30/1999
The Kurdistani National Liberation Front, the political wing of the Kurdistani Workers Party (PKK), on Tuesday in Vienna warned that that sentence given to hang the PKK's leader, Abdullah Ocalan, would escalate conflict in Turkey and in the Middle East.
AFP quoted a statement issued by the Kurdistani National Liberation Front as saying that Turkey had ignored, by releasing such a sentence, the Kurdish call to find a peaceful solution to the war and to halt the "bloodbath," adding that Turkey has refused a "historical opportunity to find a democratic solution for the Kurdish problem."
The statement added, "We cannot keep silent towards this attack. We will repel in a way different from that which used to be in the past. It is a new and different situation." It said the PKK has considered Ocalan's trial unfair since the very beginning.
The statement said the front does not recognize this sentence, adding that the party will study this new development, and will discuss it in order to decide its future strategy.
