ISESCO calls for scientific assistance to developing countries
Regional, Economics, 6/29/1999

Director General of the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO/based in Rabat), Abdul Aziz Altwaijri, called upon the international community to assist developing countries in promoting scientific and technological development.

In an address at the World Conference on Science, being held in Budapest, the head of the Organization of the Islamic Conference's body said that one of the shortcomings of international cooperation is that it has failed to improve the level of scientific development in developing countries.

He added that the only effective way to alleviate suffering in developing countries was the promotion of scientific and technological cooperation between developing and developed countries as well as by ensuring the best form of planning through promoting scientific and technological development.

The director general of ISESCO also stressed the need for a more balanced scientific development in the world as well as for the declaration of a world program on scientific development for the elimination of disparities between humans.

Altwaijri appealed to the scientists and officials in charge of scientific research in the governments of the world participating in the World Congress on Science to work for the use of scientific progress and scientific and technological capabilities in the service of humankind, for spreading and promoting understanding, and for establishing peace and stimulating development for the welfare of all human societies.
