The BBC correspondent in Damascus said on Sunday that the visit of Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi to Damascus on Sunday came just few hours following an urgent message sent by French President Jacques Chirac to Syrian President Hafez al-Assad, in which Chirac asked Syria "to interfere rapidly in order to calm down the military conditions and to have an impact on the Hizbullah Party and the Lebanese resistance to recede military escalation, due to the fact that both Syria and Iran are considered the main supporters in the region for the Lebanese national resistance." Sudanese political sources revealed intensive consultations for joining the former president Jaafar Nimeiri to the current government. It was announced in Khartoum on Saturday that diplomatic relations have been restored between Sudan and Britain at the "under ambassador level." An official source at the Sudanese Foreign Ministry said that the decision provides for the restoration of bilateral relations was taken during the current visit held by the secretary of the Sudanese Foreign Ministry, Hassan Abidin, to London and his meeting with the British minister of state at the British Foreign Office, Geoffrey Hoon. Libyan leader Col. Moammar Gaddafi on Sunday in Tripoli received telephone calls from the president of Gambia, Yahya Jammeh, and the chairman of the military committee in Guinea Bissau, Othman Mani, during which talks dealt with conditions in the western part of the African continent. Go

Lebanese Prime Minister Salim al-Hoss on Sunday said, "Lebanon is not ready to sign any security arrangements with Israel and will not give up UN resolution 425," reiterating Lebanon's adherence to the April Understanding agreement. In a statement to the Lebanese daily al-Deyar published on Sunday, the Lebanese prime minister added that the objective of Israel's recent attacks is to drag Lebanon into security arrangements. He asserted the support of the Lebanese government for the Lebanese resistance against Israel, because resistance is a legitimate right. Go

The Arab Journalists Union condemned last week's Israeli attacks on Lebanon. Salah El-Din Hafez, the union's secretary general, said, "The trusteeship sees in its statement issued yesterday that Israel's expansion of its aggression which included destroying civil targets and basic infrastructure like electrical stations, roads, bridges and houses of innocent civilians forms a serious escalation not only against Lebanon and its people but against the whole Arab nation." Speaker of the Moroccan House of Representatives (lower chamber of the parliament), Abdelouahed Radi, is taking part in the 34th session of the Arab inter-Parliamentary Union that opened in Damascus Sunday. After he stressed that the liberation of occupied Arab territories is Arab states' major cause, Radi hoped that the meeting will move forward in seeking a solution to the Arab nation's causes. Go

The United States European Command said today that US jets fired on "an Iraqi military command and control site southwest of Mosul" in response to being target by Iraqi radar and fired upon by Iraqi anti-aircraft artillery. The jets, which are part of Operation Northern Watch, which patrols the no-fly zone over northern Iraq, departed the area safely, the statement said. Go

The Algerian daily al-Khabar issued on Sunday said Algerian security forces killed three gunmen from the Armed Islamic Group (GIA) in Chlef district, just 208 km from the capital Algiers. The paper also indicated that one member of the GIA was killed near a paper factory in al-Rabaheyah area in Saida province. Go

A corespondent for the Omani newspaper El-Watan, Hesham Nasr, was killed in last week's Israeli attacks on Lebanon. El-Watan newspaper reported yesterday that Nasr was killed under El-Saediat bridge when the shelling destroyed the car in which he was riding while performing his vocational duty in covering the Israeli attacks on June 25.
